Years ago I was working for a multinational consulting company as a Graduate, and one day I was taking a ‘well-deserved’ break from work and was socializing with the HR Manager.

Through the conversation, she mentioned she was organizing a couple of people to attend an Emerging Leadership Program and I just hurriedly asked if I could be in it.

With no real hesitation, she said yes, and I was ecstatic. It was a four-day program held in a boutique with a buffet lunch catered for every day, who wouldn’t be excited?

As the date drew closer, I started getting a little nervous because I literally didn’t know what to expect. I was young, naïve, and very influenceable. As it was meant for ‘emerging leaders’ I started thinking “wait, what if this is some brainwashing🤯 exercise for me to become a cold and calculated leader within this organization?”

Did I forget to mention this particular company was really toxic?

Harboring a pessimistic view whilst sitting in the hotel for Day 1, and the coaches walked into the room and began.

Little more than 30 mins into it, I had completely shifted my attitude and I was loving the program.

After the fourth day, I learned so many things about myself like what leadership traits were important to me, goal setting, visualization, and more.

We explored ideas💡 and concepts that most don’t ever get to do.

➡️ Let’s face it, busyness keeps us from addressing the things that matter the most.

➡️ And what could be more important about learning💡 about yourself

➡️ Your passions

➡️ Your direction in life

➡️Where you are now, and where you want to be….

We never learn these things in school🏫, so we can sometimes feel lost without a guiding north star.

It’s been 10 years since that life-changing four-day experience and whilst the program was on developing into a leader before being able to lead others, you must first lead yourself!

I’ll never forget those amazing coaches who taught me one of the most invaluable lessons I’ve learned so far, which is that in order to achieve what you want in life, you must pull yourself toward your goals🚩. This is self-leadership 😊
